Candidate Application for 2023 Director Election

The Bylaws of Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (SMECO) provide that SMECO members possessing the necessary qualifications may be elected to its Board of Directors. In order to be considered a candidate for the Board of Directors election, please provide the information requested below. The form requires you to submit your biography and photo. For more information, see the March 2023 issue of the Cooperative Review.

Board of Directors Application

If you share a SMECO joint account with your spouse or someone else, both members must meet all director qualifications, according to Bylaws Article 1.03 F.

Candidate Qualifications

1. Are you currently a SMECO member and have you been a member of SMECO for the past 12 months?(Required)
2. Is your principal residence now, and during the past 12 months, in the SMECO service territory, and specifically in the above named county?(Required)
3. Are you an incumbent or a candidate for an elective public office in connection with which salary is in excess of one hundred dollars ($100) per year?(Required)
4. Are you a close relative of or residing in the same household as an employee or current director of the Cooperative?(Required)
The term “close relative” means a person who through blood, law, or marriage, is a spouse, child, stepchild, father, stepfather, mother, stepmother, brother, stepbrother, half-brother, sister, stepsister, half-sister, grandparent, grandchild, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, son-in-law, or daughter-in-law.
5. Have you been an employee of SMECO within the past 12 months?(Required)
6. Are you currently, or in the past 12 months, employed by, control, own more than 10 percent of, serve as a director or officer of, or receive more than 10 percent of your annual gross income from an entity that fits either of the descriptions below?(Required)

(1) an entity that advances its pecuniary interest by regularly, directly, and substantially competing with the Cooperative or an entity in which the Cooperative owns a majority interest;

(2) an entity that receives more than 10 percent of its annual gross income directly or indirectly from the Cooperative or an entity in which the Cooperative owns a majority interest.

Please provide a bullet list and limit your biography to approximately 1,500 characters, including spaces. Use the list below as a guide. Your biography and photo will be included in SMECO's Annual Members' Meeting Notice that is mailed to all SMECO members, and must be submitted by May 26, 2023.

  • SMECO membership and SMECO board information, if applicable

Social Media and Campaign Guidelines

SMECO has an established policy of disallowing Board candidates’ use of SMECO resources to further their campaigns. This includes using SMECO’s Facebook and Twitter pages since they are considered resources of the Cooperative. While posting messages promoting yourself or any other candidate(s) directly on SMECO’s Facebook page is prohibited, we want to advise all Board candidates that simply tagging SMECO’s Facebook or Twitter pages is allowed (see tags below).
