SMECO and VMDAEC 2025 scholarship winners
In 2025, SMECO awarded four $2500 scholarships to high school seniors who live in the cooperative’s service area. Recipients receive awards based on scholastic achievement, financial need, and school and community involvement. This year’s recipients are Sophia Cheng of Huntingtown High School, Maddox Cypress of Westlake High School, Alexander Myers of La Plata High School, and Ashlyn Zeier of Leonardtown High School.
In addition to the four students receiving SMECO scholarships, three others from the cooperative’s service area received money for higher education from the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC) and its Education Scholarship Foundation. The foundation awarded $124,000 in college scholarships to deserving high school students for the 2024–25 school year, including 33 Worth Hudson Scholarships. Included in the Hudson awards were:
- Garen Gray, Patuxent High School
- Mark White II, La Plata High School
- Gabriel Dempsey, Leonardtown High School
