Grant money helps support reliability improvements
In October 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) awarded SMECO a $32.5 million Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnership (GRIP) grant to cover up to 67 percent of the costs for various transmission, distribution, and telecommunications infrastructure improvements in Southern Maryland. SMECO will receive monthly reimbursements throughout project execution, which is expected to continue through 2029. The first installment was received in August 2025.

SMECO filed for energy rate adjustment on May 29
On May 29, 2026, SMECO filed a request with the Public Service Commission (PSC) to increase the cooperative’s base Standard Offer Service (SOS) rates. SMECO is required to revise its base energy rate when the Power Cost Adjustment (PCA) exceeds 5 percent above or below the base energy rate for three consecutive months. The PCA met that threshold in March, April, and May, triggering the filing.
Standard Offer Service rate update
Total residential Standard Offer Service (SOS) rate for June: $0.124206 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
- Summer Residential Energy Charge: $0.1057 per kWh
- June Residential PCA: $0.018506 per kWh
SMECO’s PCA for June was 17.50% more than the current residential base SOS rate.
