Waldorf substation hits two big milestones this summer
Construction on a new substation being built in Waldorf hit two major milestones this summer when SMECO received and installed two new 20/37 megavolt-amp (MVA) transformers and the control house shell. SMECO worked with a local crane rental company to install the components.
The future substation, which is scheduled to be energized in early 2025, is being constructed at the intersection of Western Parkway and Maryland Route 228, just north of the aging substation it will replace. Its design follows new box structure station construction—a great design for urban areas because it incorporates advanced modular construction techniques and compact, standardized components.
Your cooperative works hard to ensure Southern Maryland’s distribution electric system remains robust, resilient, and redundant. The future substation will help meet the growing demand for electric supply in Waldorf as the population continues to expand. Watch time-lapse videos of construction progress at smeco.coop/waldorf.
