Contact Person Phone Number EmailThe event will be held at the Tobacco Plantation. For ages 14 and older. This workshop will offer participants an in-depth look at pickling in the 17th century. It will discuss the types of pickling and fermentation popular at the time as well as the reasons for pickling, specifically food preservation, flavor profiles, and medicinal uses. Visitors will explore the 17th -century kitchen garden, learn about popular produce grown in England and the Chesapeake, as well as how the necessity of seasonal eating and lack of refrigeration impacted food preparation. Using period recipes, equipment, and methods, participants will be able to make and sample pickled foods. This program involves walking on uneven, unpaved terrain and hands-on work with food materials. Common allergens, including dairy and gluten, will be present. Program held rain or shine. Registration opens July 6.
