• FlexHome is a voluntary pilot for SMECO residential members who have an eligible Wi-Fi-connected  water heater or have purchased a new eligible water heater through the Home Energy Improvement Program.
• SMECO’s FlexHome pilot is designed to help reduce energy use during times of high energy demand. Reducing demand decreases the use of less efficient and more expensive power sources. That’s good for the environment, and our community!
• Participants agree to brief water heater adjustments lasting no more than a few hours during peak electric demand periods. Adjustments to your water heater typically occur on weekdays and non-holidays. Unless there is a system emergency, peak periods do not occur on weekends or holidays.
• Enrolled members receive incentives in the form of rebates the first year they enroll, and annual bill credits each year they participate.

Eligible members must:

• Be a SMECO residential member with active electric service in your name.
• Use an eligible Wi-Fi-connected water heater manufactured by one of our eligible providers.
• Allow SMECO to make brief, small adjustments to your water heater settings on days of higher energy demand.

If you want to participate but don’t see your water heater brand listed here, email us to express your interest in enrolling your AO Smith, GE, LG, or other Wi-Fi-connected water heater. We will let you know as other water heater models become eligible for this pilot.

• If you already own an existing eligible water heater:
  1. You can enroll through our online portal.
• If you don’t own an existing eligible water heater:
  1. You can purchase a new water heater through SMECO’s Home Energy Improvement Program and receive rebates of up to 75% of the total cost (an average of $1,100).
  2. Once you have your new water heater installed and activated, enroll in the FlexHome pilot through our online portal.

Once SMECO confirms your eligibility, you will be enrolled. You will receive notification of your enrollment status via the email address provided in your account registration.

Depending on your provider, notifications will appear on your water heater or in your web/mobile application. Adjustments should have little to no impact on your comfort and you may not even notice the adjustment.

The typical event duration may last a few hours or less, and only on non-holiday weekdays. Once the event is over, your water heater will return to its normal setting.

• We aim to minimize discomfort through limited periods of water heater adjustment. Adjustments should have little to no impact on your comfort and you may not even notice the adjustment.
• Your participation is voluntary, and you will retain control of your water heater. You can easily opt out of an event for any reason.

Email SMECOFlexHome@icf.com to request your unenrollment from the pilot. Once you have been removed from the pilot, your water heater(s) will no longer be controlled, and you won’t receive the bill credits.
