Provide efficient and reliable service in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and related equipment.
A. Maintains, services and repairs internal combustion engines, fuel systems, electrical circuits, steering and other components of automotive equipment.
B. Maintains, services, and repairs all types of aerial device, digger derricks and other types of boom equipment.
C. Diagnoses and repairs electronic systems on automotive and diesel engines. Performs electronic repairs on antilock brakes, air bag and emission systems. Utilizes specialized electronic testing equipment, including Pro-Link, Tech 2 and Snap-On 2500 scanners. Utilizes complex wiring diagrams to diagnose operating faults in wire harnesses and computer controls.
D. Assists in major overhauling of engines, transmissions, suspension, brake suspension, brake systems (hydraulic and air), and drive line systems.
E. Maintain, repair and service all types of road construction and other motorized equipment.
F. Repairs and/or replaces various cab and body components, including window mechanisms, door and bin latches, bumpers, painting, etc.
G. Performs minor electric welding, acetylene welding cutting and brazing repairs in conjunction with fabrication as required.
H. Inspects and makes repairs and adjustments to hydraulic and air systems, as directed.
I. Performs emergency repairs in the field, as necessary.
J. Assists in maintaining adequate inventory of all parts, oil, grease, and supplies, and keeps accurate records of vehicle maintenance.
K. Assures that assigned vehicle and/or equipment is kept clean and in good working condition and that the mileage and/or safety reports are completed as required.
L. Conducts vehicle and equipment inspections to assure SMECO’s fleet meets all Federal, State and Co-op rules and regulations.
M. Assists in the instruction and training of others assigned to section.
N. Responsible for the physical condition and security of the shop area, assigned vehicles, tools and equipment.
O. Inspects all new vehicles and related equipment; assures servicing and installation of decals prior to putting vehicle/s into operation.
P. Enforces safety rules for the protection of assigned personnel, and assures proper use of tools and equipment.
In addition, duties of equal or lesser skill may be assigned by the Lead Automotive Technician or assigned supervisor to meet emergencies or other operating needs.

This job requires reading, writing and mathematics; therefore, a high school diploma or the equivalent is preferred, but not required. Additional formal training in general mechanics is required.
At least two years of progressive work experience repairing and maintaining trucks, automobiles and mechanical equipment. Also must have experience in using vehicle support software, specialized electronic testing equipment, and tools to diagnose automotive operating faults is required. Must hold a valid Maryland Commercial Driver’s License, Class A, and a current Department of Transportation, Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
