Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has an immediate opening for an Automotive Technician 3rd Class in our Hughesville location. SMECO is a rapidly growing electric utility that serves over 170,000 consumers just south of Washington, D.C. SMECO is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace. The primary functions of this position will be to provide efficient and reliable service in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and related equipment. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing preventative maintenance on vehicles and relate equipment; reports to supervisor equipment in need of major repair; keeps accurate maintenance records; learns to perform fabrication, acetylene welding and electric welding to make minor repairs; assists and learns to diagnose and repair electronic systems and automotive and diesel engines. Learns to perform electronic repairs on antilock brakes, air bag and emission systems. Also learns to utilize specialized electronic testing equipment, including web-based and laptop standalone test equipment for diagnoses; learn to utilize complex wiring diagrams to diagnose operating faults in wire harness and computer controls. This position pays $31.45/hr.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
Education:
This job requires reading, writing and mathematics; therefore, a high school diploma or the equivalent is preferred, but not required.
Experience:
At least one year of experience as a Shop Attendant, or the equivalent experience in automotive maintenance and/or vocational training.
Essential Skill:
Must hold a valid Maryland Learners permit for a Class A Commercial Driver’s License or above, with a good driving record and obtain a regular Class A CDL within six months. Must also hold a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
