Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has an immediate opening for a Payroll & Accounting Manager. The primary function of this position will be to direct the overall operation of the payroll function. This position is responsible for overseeing and supervising payroll processing by the Payroll Administrator and with the ability to process payroll in a backup capacity. Ensure tax filings and related payments are processed and filed as required. This position will also ensure timely completion of reconciliations for all payroll and related accounts and reviews for accuracy and investigate any discrepancies. Maintain knowledge of payroll processing procedures, updates such procedures as necessary when there are changes in law or software, and ensures compliance with applicable internal controls. Also maintain knowledge of systems to support payroll and accounting functions and maintain a thorough understanding of the transactions interfacing with the accounting system, ensuring data and reporting integrity across systems. Finally, this position will assist in the preparation of financial, statistical and budget data and reporting in compliance with applicable internal controls, policies and procedures. Provides support and work papers for external and governmental audits. 

Must be a highly motivated, self-starter who possess and utilizes critical thinking skills regularly in their work, making time management a priority. Must possess leadership skills to guide and assist the team, enthusiastic with a willingness to learn new systems, processes, personalities, and disciplines to recognize, analyze, and solve day to day challenges. 

Candidates are required to have a four-year college degree with emphasis in accounting or finance. Must have Fundamentals of Payroll (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification or obtain within twelve months of position award. 

Candidates are required to have a minimum of six years progressive experience in accounting, treasury and payroll, along with demonstrated personal computer (PC), planning, organizational, communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills. 

The starting salary range for this position is $77,200-$100,100. SMECO offers and excellent benefits program including a 401k 6% dollar for dollar match and additional 3% non-elective company contribution.
