Register Your Plug-In Solar

If you own a “balcony” or portable solar system that plugs into a standard household outlet, please notify SMECO by completing the form below. Registering your system helps protect crews that may be working on SMECO’s power lines.

Before installing a system

  • Ensure your equipment is certified and approved for use in the U.S.
  • Follow the National Electrical Code (NEC), State of Maryland requirements, and all other applicable safety codes
  • Consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure whether your residence’s electrical system is compatible with the equipment
  • Avoid using damaged equipment or improper connections
  • Ensure the total combined output of all your portable solar systems does not exceed 1,200 watts

Please be advised that members install behind-the-meter devices at their own risk. SMECO will not install, inspect, maintain, or approve plug-in solar systems. If a plug-in system creates a safety hazard or affects electric service, SMECO may take action, including disconnection of service if necessary to protect public safety.

If you have any questions, please contact SMECO at 1-888-440-3311.
