SMECO and Shell Recharge have teamed up to install up to 40 EV charging stations throughout Southern Maryland. Installations will include Level 2 chargers, which charge most EVs in a few hours, and Direct Current (DC) Fast Chargers, which charge most vehicles in about a half hour.
EV owners can use the Shell Recharge mobile app to find the nearest station, pay, and get real-time charging updates.

Frequently Asked Questions
SMECO is installing up to 60 EV chargers throughout Southern Maryland. While most will be Level 2 chargers, we’ll also install up to 20 Level 3 DC fast chargers.
Chargers will be installed throughout Southern Maryland at government-owned sites featuring 24-hour public access.
Under the pilot program, the SMECO co-op absorbs the costs of installation.
Level 2 chargers cost 18 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), or roughly $1.25 an hour. Level 3 DC fast chargers cost 34 cents per kWh, or around $2.50/hr.
Just download the Shell Recharge mobile app. You can set up an account in minutes, then pay with your credit card. The app also sends you a notification when your EV’s done charging.
SMECO charges $0.18/kWh, or around $1.25 an hour, at a SMECO Level 2 EV Recharge station.
Speed! The higher the level, the faster your car charges.
Level 1 EV charging often come with your EV, and plug into a standard 120-V outlet. Just plug in at home and charge overnight. Level 1 chargers can take up to 12 hours.
Level 2 EV charging are significantly faster, and may require professional home installation. They run on 240-V outlets (that’s “the big one you plug a dryer into.”). Lots of Level 2 chargers are available throughout the U.S.
Level 3 charging, or Direct Current Fast Charging, fuel up most EVs in around a half an hour. They use a three-phase 277/480-V service, which requires a larger transformer and access to multi-phase distribution lines.
