Joseph Gilbert Murphy

Murphy was elected to SMECO’s Board of Directors in August 2020 as a representative from St. Mary’s County. He owned and operated the Murphy’s Town and Country store from 1979 to 2020.

A lifelong resident of St. Mary’s County, he was a commissioner for the St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission from 1998 to 2006, including a term as vice chairman.

Murphy is an active member of his community. He has belonged to the Seventh District Volunteer Rescue Squad since 1985 and to the Seventh District Optimist Club since 1981, serving in leadership posts in both organizations. In local education, he was a board member and vice president for Holy Angels-Sacred Heart School. He is a past board member for the Family Council for St. Mary’s Nursing Center and he currently serves on the Finance Council of Holy Angels Church. Murphy was recently voted in as Member-at-Large for the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland.
