Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has an immediate opening for a Distribution Engineer. A lower grade Associate or Senior Associate Distribution Engineer position may be considered based on qualifications. The primary Distribution Engineer position functions are to take a lead role in developing, implementing, and facilitating electric distribution system planning studies, electric system power flow and short-circuit software model development, customer generation interconnections, distribution protection device selection and coordination, construction and material standards, distribution automation technologies, data analytics, electric metering principles, 15kV equipment selection and application, primary 15 kV electric system capital improvement project concept designs, and customer power quality issue resolution.
This position will also provide coordination and project management oversite support of commercial and industrial project electric service designs, provide design support for large subdivision primary design layouts, and take a lead role in directing, coordinating, and monitoring assigned engineering projects, programs, permits, and contracts.

Candidates are required to have a Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET accredited engineering college or university in an electric engineering discipline, with some business administration, computer, management services, power system engineering, and technical writing courses preferred. A MD Professional Engineering license, or the ability to obtain such license within one year of employment is desired.
Candidates are required to have a minimum of four years progressive work experience in the engineering, construction, or operations department of an electric utility or equivalent engineering consulting firm. A practical working knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), electric utility system planning, engineering, construction, and operations practices, along with a demonstrated working knowledge of electric utility related and MS Office software applications is required.
The starting salary range for this position is $88,700-$114,900 based on qualifications. SMECO offers and excellent benefits program including a 401k 6% dollar for dollar match and additional 3% non-elective company contribution.
