SMECO awards $12,000 contribution to local organizations
SMECO recently received a $12,000 contribution from CoBank through its matching funds program to benefit local organizations serving our community.
Voting Opens for SMECO’s 2026 Annual Meeting Election
SMECO will hold its 88th Annual Meeting on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at 6 p.m., at the Mechanicsville Volunteer Fire Department Social Hall.
SMECO Issues Credits to Members
SMECO is refunding members’ capital credits totaling nearly $7 million. Of that total, a general refund of about$4.6 million will be issued in July.
SMECO and VMDAEC Award Scholarships
SMECO has awarded four scholarships for 2026 to high school seniors who live in the cooperative’s service area.
SMECO Recognizes Outstanding Teachers
SMECO worked with the school systems of Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties to select and honor 23 educators with Outstanding Teacher awards for leadership in the fields of mathematics, science, technology, and CTE-STEM.
SMECO Nominating Committee to Meet
The Board of Directors has appointed 10 members to the 2026 Nominating Committee scheduled to meet on Monday, May 11, 2026, at SMECO’s headquarters in Hughesville. The committee will review candidate applications for the five Board positions to be elected this year. Elections will be held to fill one position in Calvert/Anne Arundel counties, one position in Charles County, one position in Prince George’s County, and two positions in St. Mary’s County.

The next hearing is set for Tuesday, March 24, 2026, beginning at 10 a.m., in the William Donald Schaefer Tower in Baltimore, and will also be live streamed.
SMECO Sponsors 32nd Annual Math Competition
Southern Maryland’s annual MATHCOUNTS competition marked its 32nd anniversary on Saturday, February 7, 2026. More than 200 students from 18 schools gathered at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick to test their math skills.

SMECO Holds 87th Annual Meeting
The following SMECO members were elected to serve on SMECO’s Board for three years: W. Michael Phipps of Calvert County, George Heinze and Richard A. Winkler of Charles County, David A. Cross, Jr. of Prince George’s County, and Scott White of St. Mary’s County.

Each of the following organizations received $3,000: Our Place Waldorf Soup Kitchen, St. Mary’s Caring Soup Kitchen, End Hunger in Calvert County/Community Harvest Network, and Clements Cuties Foundation.
SMECO to distribute Legislative Energy Relief Refund
The refund, created through House Bill 1035 and administered by the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC), provides an average total credit of $80 per eligible household, distributed in two phases: summer 2025 and winter 2026.
SMECO Recognizes Outstanding Teachers
Receiving awards this year were nine math teachers, nine science teachers, and five CTE-STEM (career technical education, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) teachers from schools in four counties.
