Home Energy Improvement Program

A no-cost home energy analysis is a great way for you to get started on finding ways to save on your energy costs. When you schedule an appointment, a SMECO Energy Advisor will visit your home to:

  • Analyze your home’s energy use
  • Install energy-saving items—LEDs, faucet aerators, efficient-flow showerheads, smart power strips, and pipe insulation (electric and gas water heaters only)
  • Provide upgrade recommendations that will further increase your savings and comfort

Use your eligible instant rebates—up to $7,500—when your contractor installs the upgrades you choose.

During HEIP appointments, SMECO Energy Advisors are helping to ensure the safety of our members by taking precautions, like social distancing, wearing masks, and sanitizing equipment. Ask about safety protocols when scheduling your appointment.

Step 2: Receive Analysis. Using diagnostic tests, your Energy Advisor will perform a comprehensive walk-through analysis to identify specific improvements that could reduce energy use by up to 20%. You may also be eligible for energy-saving measures to be installed on the spot. With your approval, items may include LEDs, faucet aerators, efficient-flow showerheads, pipe insulation, and smart power strips.

Step 3: Review Report. Within seven business days, your Energy Advisor will provide a list of customized solutions that highlight the approximate energy savings and pricing to make the upgrades. Plus, you’ll learn about SMECO rebates—up to $7,500—available for one year.

Step 4: Select Improvements. Work with your Energy Advisor to review the recommendations, and then decide which solutions make sense for your home and budget. The installation contractor will provide a contract that shows your final cost with the guaranteed rebates for improvements you select. Your installation contractor may require partial payment prior to starting work; the remaining payment is due following the completion of your project.

Step 6: Enjoy Savings! Your home may be selected for QA/QC to ensure customer satisfaction, or you may receive a survey via email to provide feedback about this program. We hope your experience is so great that you share it with your neighbors, family, and friends!

Home Energy Analysis FAQs

What is a comprehensive walk-through analysis?

A comprehensive walk-through analysis is a home visit by a SMECO Energy Advisor to determine your home’s baseline energy efficiency and to identify opportunities for improvements. The Energy Advisor will visually evaluate your home and may conduct tests for air leakage. They look for opportunities to improve your home’s insulation, heating and cooling system, appliances, and lighting.

Should I accompany the SMECO energy advisor during the analysis?

Yes, because the findings will determine recommendations specific to your home. Your active participation will help you to understand the recommendations, learn tips for reducing energy use, and make informed decisions about making your home more energy efficient.

What if I choose not to implement any of the recommended improvements?

After your analysis is complete, you should review your Energy Advisor’s recommended improvements closely. They are also available to answer any questions you may have after the visit. You decide which upgrades to select—and that means you might choose not to make upgrades at this time. But if you do, your Energy Advisor will help you get connected with a trusted installation contractor. Throughout the decision-making process, your Energy Advisor can explain all the benefits of each potential upgrade.

What does it cost to participate?

SMECO customer-members may schedule a comprehensive walk-through analysis at no additional cost to your existing service. All residential customer-members are eligible, even if you have previously participated in the Quick Home Energy Check-up or Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® programs. You are responsible for paying for the improvements you agree to as part of the contract you sign with your chosen participating contractor. Improvement costs depend on your home (size, age, style, etc.) and the types of improvements you choose to make. Remember, you could be eligible for up to $7,500 in instant rebates from SMECO to help offset some of the upgrade costs.
