Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative has an immediate opening for a Staff Accountant-Accounting & Budgeting. The primary function of this position will be to review, analyze, reconcile and record transactions. Ensures timely processing of accounting information pertaining to related transactions. Provides timely accounting information and analytical support as required. Maintains knowledge of SMECO systems relating to accounting. This position will also assist in the preparation of accounting records, financial and statistical data and reporting in compliance with applicable internal controls, policies and procedures. Finally, this position will provide audit schedules on assigned accounts and assist with the annual audit.

Responsible for preparing and reviewing account reconciliations and assisting in the completion of monthly and annual external financial reporting.

Prepares related working papers required by independent auditors and assists management during the annual audit, including year-end financial statement preparation.

Provides support to CFO, Controller, Directors, and Managers on audit, tax returns, and other accounting needs.

Responsible for analyzing and reconciling all SMECO and subsidiary bank accounts, along with maintaining supporting worksheets, documentation, and resolution of issues.

Assists with annual budget preparation and provides support to applicable personnel to ensure entries are coded correctly to reflect against approved budget.

Analyze monthly department budget and accounting records to maintain expenditure controls.

Examine budgets for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with GAAP and FERC accounting guidelines.

Ensures timely processing of journal entries, invoices and payments.

Provides accounting information and analytical support as required.

Reviews operational procedures and makes recommendation for improvement when necessary.

Candidates are required to have a four-year college degree with emphasis in accounting or business.

Candidates are required to have a minimum of six years progressive experience in administrative or accounting position with demonstrated personal computer (PC), planning, organizational, communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.

The starting salary range for this position is $68,700-$89,000. SMECO offers and excellent benefits program including a 401k 6% dollar for dollar match and additional 3% non-elective company contribution.
