During an HVAC appointment, many authorized SMECO contractors are taking additional precautions to ensure the safety of our members. Ask about safety protocols when scheduling your visit.

Starting 10/1/23 through 12/24/23 we are dropping EER/EER2 minimum efficiency requirements for all air source heat pumps, Single and Multi-zone HP mini splits. All units listed in the chart below will only need to meet SEER/SEER2 and HSPF/HSPF2 requirements.

**SEER = Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating: A rating that denotes the efficiency of air conditioning equipment. The higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit and the lower the operating cost.

†EER = Energy Efficiency Rating: The ratio of an air conditioning unit’s cooling capacity in British thermal units (Btus) per hour to the total electrical input in watts.

‡HSPF = Heating Seasonal Performance Factor: The total heating output of a heat pump in Btus during its normal usage period for heating, as divided by the total electrical energy input in watt-hours during the same period.

§COP = Coefficient of Performance: A ratio that measures the efficiency of a heat pump. The higher the number, the more efficient the heat pump.

***Efficiency levels are in effect for equipment purchased on or after 06/17/2020.

Inflation Reduction Act

In August 2022, the federal government passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which allocated more than $369 billion over 10 years to several energy efficiency initiatives. Wondering how you can take advantage of these tax credits?

Ask your authorized contractor about highly efficient ENERGY STAR®-certified Heat Pump Water Heaters and Air Source Heat Pumps. Both units are super energy efficient and will help you save money over the unit’s lifetime. Combine that with Inflation Reduction Act federal tax credits of 30% of the cost of the Heat Pump Water Heater and/or Air Source Heat Pump (up to $2,000 each) and the savings will continue to pile up. Tax Credits

The Non-Business Energy Property Tax Credits are available for purchases made between 12/31/2017 and 12/31/2022. Qualified ENERGY STAR certified Air Source Heat Pumps and Central Air Conditioning units may be eligible for the Non-Business Energy Property Tax Credit of $300.
