You already know about earning with SmartTemp. Now you can earn all year long. Enroll in SmartTemp Year Round and you’ll get bill credits annually while helping to reduce demand on the electric grid—and that benefits everyone. When you participate, small, brief adjustments of 1–4°F will be made to your smart thermostat when energy demand is high, any time of the year, with little impact on your comfort.
The typical event lasts 15 minutes to one hour. Once it is over, your system will return the temperature to its normal setting. And, you can easily opt out of an event for any reason.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Your bill credits will appear on your SMECO bill under “Other Charges” and will be labeled as “SmartTemp Year Round Credit Applied.”
- SMECO’s SmartTemp Year Round Program is a voluntary program for SMECO residential members who have eligible smart thermostats connected to their central air conditioner/heat pump.
- SMECO’s SmartTemp Year Round Program is designed to help reduce energy use during times of high energy demand. Reducing demand decreases the use of less efficient and more expensive power sources. That’s good for the environment, and it helps keep energy costs low for everyone.
- Participants agree to brief thermostat adjustments of 4° or less during peak electric demand periods. Adjustments to your thermostat typically occur on weekdays and last no more than one hour. (Unless there is a system emergency, peak periods do not occur on weekends or holidays.)
- Participants can receive up to $96 per household per year for participating in SMECO’s SmartTemp Year Round Program.

Once SMECO confirms your eligibility, you will be enrolled in the program. You will receive notification of your enrollment status via email using the address provided in your account registration.
Depending on your thermostat provider, notifications will appear on the thermostat, mobile device, or web application.
Your thermostat will be adjusted by 4° or less only on event days. Your participation is voluntary, and you will retain control of your thermostat. You can easily opt out of an event for any reason.
- At the start of an adjustment event, your thermostat will be automatically adjusted up to 4° above or below the current temperature setting.
- The typical event will last 15 minutes to one hour on non-holiday weekday afternoons. Once the event is over, your thermostat will return to its normal setting.
Send an email to SMECOSmartTempYearRound@icf.com requesting to move back to the SmartTemp Program. Once you have been taken off the SmartTemp Year Round Program, your thermostat will be controlled for summer events only.
Send an email to SMECOSmartTempYearRound@icf.com requesting to end your participation in the program. Once you have been taken off the program, your thermostat(s) will no longer be controlled.
